I have read several other books by Saramago, i.e., Blindnesss and The Double. They are difficult to read because he writes very long paragraphs and the book sometimes loses something in the translation but reading them have always been rewarding experiences, in the end.
This time, I don't think I will last long enough to finish. I am not sure if the translator did not grasp the message totally and did not put it down on paper well enough or if the message is just circuitous and confusing. The premise is really interesting; death takes a holiday and there are unbelievable ramifications. It just seems to be taking too long to make the point. I will put it away to finish on another day.
